At the Downtown Athletic Club, we take pride in keeping a space that’s welcoming, safe, and motivating for everyone who walks in. A little courtesy goes a long way, and so does knowing the ground rules. Here are the gym etiquette rules and everyday reminders that keep the Club a great place to train for every member and guest.
Dress for the Workout, Starting with Your Shoes
Athletic attire, including closed-toe athletic shoes, must be worn at all times. The only exceptions are inside the Mind Body Studio, the locker rooms, and the pools, and shoes are still required on your way to and from each one. Your clothing should let you move freely and safely, so pajamas, blue jeans, slacks, dresses, and boots aren’t appropriate workout attire. The right gear helps prevent injuries and keeps the Club clean for everyone.
Lift Smart with Spotters and Safety Collars
When you’re pushing heavy weight or working close to failure, use a spotter. Our staff and your fellow lifters are glad to help, so don’t hesitate to ask. Safety collars are required on every loaded barbell. They keep plates secure and protect both you and the people training around you.
Handle Equipment with Care
Please don’t drop dumbbells or bang weights. Controlled reps are safer for you, easier on the equipment, and much more pleasant for the person on the next bench. All Weight Room equipment stays in the Weight Room. If you need to move a piece of equipment, ask a staff member for assistance so it’s done safely.
Share the Space
If someone is waiting on the equipment you’re using, invite them to work in between your sets, and they’ll return the favor when the roles are reversed. We all love a quick scroll, but please avoid using your phone between sets so equipment stays available and workouts keep flowing. Phone calls aren’t permitted on the second floor; feel free to take them in the Lobby or near the Welcome Desk. If you plan to take photos or videos, ask for permission from those around you first.
A shared space also means shared volume. Yelling and vulgar language aren’t permitted, so everyone on the floor can focus on their own workout.
Clean Up and Put It Back
Wipe down all machines, benches, and accessories with sanitizer after use. When you’re finished, return everything to its proper place. If you’re unsure where something belongs, ask a staff member. We’re happy to help.
Keep Bags in the Locker Room
Please place bags and personal belongings in the locker rooms or cubbies. Clear floors and benches mean fewer trip hazards and more room to move.
Age Guidelines for the Second Floor
Children ages 0-12 aren’t permitted on the second floor. Members who are 13 must complete a Junior Orientation before using the second floor, and once they have, they may train with adult supervision (ages 18+). Members ages 14+ may use the second floor on their own. Guests ages 0-17 must have adult supervision at all times. If you have a 13-year-old who’s ready to start lifting, email Tao at tgalindo@downtownac.com regarding Junior Orientation. Here are our youth membership and facility policies.
Respect the ZONE Workout Space
Please avoid taking equipment from the ZONE during ZONE workouts. Take a look at the ZONE schedule to plan around sessions. Curious about the ZONE? Your first workout is on us. Contact Jen at jstanton@downtownac.com to schedule yours.
Keeping the second floor clean, safe, and respectful makes every workout a good one, yours and everyone else’s. Thank you for doing your part to make the DAC a community built on respect, wellness, and shared goals. You can review the complete DAC Rules and Policies anytime.

The Downtown Athletic Club (DAC) has been Eugene’s locally owned, family-operated health club for over 40 years. Under one roof you’ll find a full Gymnasium, Cardio + Strength Floor, Group Exercise classes, a Lap Pool, warm-water therapy pool, Downtown Pilates Studio, The ZONE training program, Newberry Preschool, and KidStop Daycare. Locally owned means we get to build a club around the community we’ve built, and continue to build.
Ready to experience it for yourself? Enjoy a complimentary guest pass and come see why so many Eugene families call the DAC home. We’re located at 999 Willamette St, Eugene, OR 97401. Give us a call at 541-484-4011 anytime.
