Train Inside, Play Outside: Your Eugene Summer Starts at the DAC

Summer in Eugene is a season you feel in your body. The Willamette warms up enough to float, Pisgah’s trails dry out, the bike paths fill up, and Loon Lake is suddenly just a short drive away. The best summers here aren’t spent watching from the sidelines. They’re spent moving. The people who get the most out of an Oregon summer are the ones whose bodies are actually ready for it. That readiness gets built at the Club, so here’s how each of our programs translates directly into a better summer outside.

Building Trail-Ready Legs for Spencer Butte, Pisgah, and South Sister

Eugene’s trail system is its own kind of gym, but it’s an unforgiving one if your legs aren’t ready. Hill climbs, uneven footing, and a pack on your back all ask something of your body that a sedentary spring doesn’t prepare you for. Group Power is one of our most popular Group X classes and a fast way to build trail-ready strength. Catch Becca, Nicole, or Dana on Monday at 5:30pm, Tuesday at 5:45am, Wednesday at 9am and 5:30pm, Thursday at 5:45am, or Saturday at 9am. When you’d rather train on your own schedule, the second floor is where you’ll find the Hack Squat, Hip Thrust, Smith Machine, and Olympic Platforms: everything you need to build the kind of leg strength that makes a Pisgah loop feel easy and a South Sister summit feel possible. And if you want a structured weekly progression that’s already programmed for you, The ZONE offers functional, coached training in small groups.

A Pool for Every Kind of Eugene Summer Day

Eugene summers pull you toward water: the river, the lakes, the coast. Our aquatics center keeps you ready for all of it, all year round. The lap pool is open and uncrowded, which makes it just as good for triathlon training as it is for getting back into swimming after years away or simply moving on the hottest days without pounding your joints. Aqua Fit is joint-friendly conditioning that’s easy on summer-tired joints. Founder Craig leads Tuesday and Thursday at 9am, and Kate brings the energy Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 11am. Afterward, or after a long hike or a day on the paddleboard, the warmer fitness pool is a great spot for active recovery.

Cardio That Carries You Through the Bike Paths

The Ruth Bascom Riverbank Path, the Fern Ridge Path, the trail out to Dexter: Eugene is a cycling town all year round, on road bikes, gravel bikes, e-bikes, or a family ride down the bike path. That’s exactly where indoor cardio earns its keep, because sustained, coached effort in a Group X cycling or cardio class translates beautifully to outdoor mileage. Pair that with Myzone: wear the belt, track your effort, and start to learn what your zones actually feel like. That knowledge pays off the first time you have to climb a hill on a borrowed bike with friends.

Train Smarter with a Coach Who Knows Eugene

If you have a specific summer goal (your first triathlon, a backpacking trip, finally standing up on a paddleboard), a DAC personal trainer can build a runway that gets you there. Trainers here aren’t reading off a generic plan. They know what Pisgah asks of your hips, what a Willamette float requires of your shoulders, and what a week chasing kids at the coast does to your lower back.

Kids Covered, So You Can Focus

A summer kickoff at the Club isn’t just about you, either. It’s about the working parent who needs a place where the kids are genuinely having fun while the workout happens, and the family that wants to spend more of the season here together. Our Summer Camps run themed weeks with swim, sport, art, and field trip options, and KidStop Daycare means you can drop the kids off, do your workout, and pick them up smiling (available during member visits). Swim lessons run seven days a week, every day we’re open, and for families looking for year-round consistency, Newberry Preschool is a full preschool inside the Club.

Ready to make this your strongest summer yet? Stop in for a tour, ask about a personal training intro, or check out our class schedule and pick one new thing to try this week. The best summers in Eugene belong to the people who showed up for them.

The Downtown Athletic Club (DAC) has been Eugene’s locally owned, family-operated health club for over 40 years. Under one roof you’ll find a full Gymnasium, Cardio + Strength Floor, Group Exercise classes, a Lap Pool, warm-water therapy pool, Downtown Pilates Studio, The ZONE training program, Newberry Preschool, KidStop Daycare, and Zest Kitchen + Bar on our third floor. Locally owned means we get to build a club around the community we’ve built, and continue to build.

Ready to experience it for yourself? Enjoy a complimentary guest pass and come see why so many Eugene families call the DAC home. We’re located at 999 Willamette St, Eugene, OR 97401. Give us a call at 541-484-4011 anytime.
