We’re thrilled to share the story of Eric and Jean Ann, two of our valued members at the Downtown Athletic Club. They’re a dynamic couple whose story illustrates the power of consistency, community, and embracing new challenges. They’ve been members of the DAC since 2006, but recently decided to take +things up a notch with the Pre-Masters swim lessons.
“We started swimming laps together when we lived in Australia,” they shared. Jean Ann stated, “I grew up swimming in San Diego”, and Eric jokingly mentioned that he’s been swimming laps — or as he likes to say, ‘flailing’ — for about ten years.
They first heard about DAC’s Pre-Masters Swim through an email announcing a Flip Turn Clinic, and decided to give it a try thinking, “Oh, I could use that.”.
While some swimmers in Masters Swim train for competition, this couple’s goal is simple: keep moving, improve technique, and enjoy every lap. They don’t intent on competing, but said “It’s just a really great workout.”
Their mindset reflects what makes DAC special — a focus on personal progress over perfection.
For anyone thinking about joining Pre-Masters or Masters Swim at the DAC, their message is clear: “Everybody’s welcoming and everyone I’ve talked to says you can do it at your own pace. You can modify the workout.”
If you’re reading this and thinking: “Could I do this?”. Yes, you absolutely can. Whether you’ve been swimming since childhood or you’re just getting into lap swimming, our Pre-Masters/ Masters swim classes are designed for a variety of abilities and goals. The goal? Better fitness, improved technique, and being part of a community.
