This June, we’re thrilled to celebrate Jean’s 30-year anniversary as an instructor at the Downtown Athletic Club! A pillar of our movement and mindfulness community, Jean’s impact spans to hundreds of members, fellow instructors, and families.
Jean’s journey started in the world of gymnastics as a young girl, giving her an edge of fearlessness. Once she became too tall to compete, her coach encouraged her to dance. She began taking lessons and classes in downtown Chicago, and became serious about dance around 15 years old. She then went on to dance with a company in Seattle for two years before earning her Master’s Degree in Dance from the University of Oregon. Afterwards, she was hired at the DAC by Marilyn as a dance instructor. Three years after teaching, she decided to become certified in Ashtanga. She trained with David Swenson in Lake Tahoe in 1998 and has been sharing her passion for this dynamic form ever since, though she’s since adapted it to be gentler on the body, while retaining its strength and grace.
Jean is also one of the original instructors who helped bring GYROTONIC® to Eugene, training alongside DAC legends Marilyn and Judith. Over several years, they worked through rigorous practice and certifications – often traveling out of state – to master and introduce this innovative movement system to our members.
When asked what she loves most about her three decades at the DAC, Jean doesn’t hesitate: “The members. Some of my best friends were members, or still are.”. For Jean, it’s all about connection, equality, and curiosity. “It’s so great to meet people anonymously. They could be a lawyer, neuro surgeon, or business owner. But in class, we’re all equal.”. Her classes blend expertise and creativity, shaped by her dancer’s spirit and dedication to teaching movement with purpose.
Outside the studio, Jean finds joy and relaxation in her garden, hand-watering her plants, watching baseball (her son even played for the Mariners!), and relaxing with a good book or movie. A lifelong learner, she continues to read, reflect, and refine her approach.
Jean, thank you for 30 years of movement, mentorship, and passion. Your presence and knowledge have helped shape the DAC into the vibrant community it is today.
Here’s to you!
