How We Share the Gymnasium at the DAC. Introducing Our New Shared Use Standards
The short answer: it’s based on how many people are playing. Our Gymnasium is one of the most loved spaces in the Club, and as both pickleball and basketball continue to grow in our community, we wanted to give everyone a simple, fair way to share the floor. No guesswork required.
That’s why you’ll now see our new Gymnasium Shared Use Standards posted on an easel right outside the gym. Here’s what they say and why they matter.
The Standards at a Glance
Basketball Use
- 1–9 players: Cross court
- 10+ players: Full court
Pickleball Use
- 1–4 players: 1 court
- 5–9 players: Up to 2 courts
- 10+ players: Up to 3 courts
Newberry Preschool Use
- Only Newberry is allowed on the Gym floor during their scheduled hours
- Monday – Friday at 10:30am – 11:30am + 3pm – 4pm
The idea is simple: as more players arrive, court space may expand to accommodate the growing group, while smaller groups help share the space so everyone has the opportunity to play.
A Few Etiquette Tips to Keep the Gym Flowing
Standards help, but a little courtesy goes even further. Here are some easy ways to keep the gym a great experience for everyone:
- Check in when you arrive. A quick hello to the players already on the floor lets everyone know who’s up next and how to split the space.
- Stay flexible. If your group started on the full court and a larger group arrives, transitioning to cross court (or sharing courts) keeps things fair.
- Rotate in kindly. Pickleball especially moves fast. Winners often stay, but make sure new players get worked into the rotation.
- Mind the equipment. Return balls, paddles, and nets to where you found them so the next group can jump right in.
Why We’re Rolling This Out Now
Pickleball has exploded in Eugene over the past few years, and our basketball community is as strong as ever. Both groups deserve a great place to play, and our gym is big enough for both when we share it well.
These standards aren’t about restriction. They’re about clarity. When everyone knows the same playbook, sharing the gym feels easy instead of awkward, and we all get more time doing what we came here to do.
Our Welcome Desk team is always happy to help you find an open court, including racquetball courts when available. We also offer nets and equipment for a variety of court activities, including badminton, pickleball, handball, racquetball, and other group games. Thank you for cooperating, and for being the kind of community that makes shared spaces like this work.

The Downtown Athletic Club has been Eugene’s locally owned, family-operated health club for over 40 years. Under one roof you’ll find a full Gymnasium, Cardio + Strength Floor, group exercise classes, Downtown Pilates Studio, The ZONE training program, Newberry Preschool, KidStop Daycare, and Zest Kitchen + Bar on our third floor. Locally owned means we get to build a club around the people who helped build it.
